Stable Outbursts (July 2012)

This is an aural representation of a project I did with Moira Zahra, for her Masters Degree dealing with ‘Narratives of Database and Chance’.

The interactive media work will be exhibited in the UK, and includes these sounds which were created through a chance process. 9 different sounds heard here correspond to audio interviews of stories by random individuals. Users will also be able to interact with film, these sounds, the stories and animated watercolours. All these elements will be shown / heard randomly every time.

This is one of the processes used for one of the interviews, where a randomize effect was used with the free glitch plugin on a particular voice. The effect can be heard as digital glitches in the recording here.

Another sound recording based on an interview. For this sound, key terms were used from the interview and translated into chosen recorded samples. Each sound was then processed through Izotope Iris. The time in which a particular key term was omitted from, was written in Iris’ spectrogram, creating a random effect.

The idea is to witness the generation of meaning through a chance process.
